Tkay Maidza returns with new single 'Must Be'

LA based, Australian R&B-rap artist Tkay Maidza has retuned with the single ‘Must Be’, her first new music since the release of her 2023 album Sweet Justice.

Produced by Maths Time Joy (Mahalia) and The Idiot, ‘Must Be’ is a thumping, attitude soaked song that starts out with a shimmer before four weighty beats explode setting the scene for the rest of the song. Like all of Maidza’s music, she bends genre throughout, with the last section taking on a swirling, more gentle synth-pop feel with a feathery vocal punctuated with chanting, distorted backing vocals.

Lyrically, the song is Maidza’s clap back to her haters: ‘Big bag full bricks mad / Yeah, they must be / Dish that and I did that / They can't touch me.’

“People shouldn’t count me out or underestimate my abilities,” Maidza says. “They should be afraid when I’m quiet, as I come back more evolved.”

‘Must Be’ launches Maidza’s șelf-proclaimed new era, and is her first new music since her 2023 album Sweet Justice , an album that won Best Soul/R&B Release at the 2024 ARIA Music Awards. Celebrating a decade of releasing music this year, Maidza’s career has seen significant highs, including supporting Billie Eilish and Dua Lipa, collaborating with Charli XCX, Kaytranada and JPEGMAFIA and scoring over 300 million global streams. ‘Must Be’ is the latest step in her incredible journey.
