New Zealand singer, songwriter and producer Fazerdaze (real name Amelia Murray) today returns with her single ‘Come Apart’. It is her first release since 2017 album Morningside which saw streams in the tens of millions.

‘Come Apart’ is a buzzy indiepop-rock number which brings back memories of the 1990s indie scene with its lo-fi production, guitars, angsty vocals and sweet melodies. In many ways its lyrics shines a light into the personal turmoil in Murray’s life throughout her extended break from music.

“‘Come Apart’ is an angsty surrender to growing apart from people in my life,” she says. “I wrote this at a time when I wasn't accepting that some of my closest relationships were just not working. I was contorting myself to fit others, doing everything I could to keep the relationships going instead of allowing them to be what they were; ending, done. I believe this song was a way for my subconscious to shout at me to surrender and to allow things in my life to come to an end.”

Murray released her self-titled debut EP in 2014, which lead to her being signed by legendary New Zealand record label Flying Nun who she released Morningside with in 2017. The album attracted critical acclaim but after touring throughout 2018 she found herself burnt out, and alongside unhealthy personal relationships, struggled to cope with her newfound success. The mental stress impacted on her creativity and left her unable to finish a single song.

“I lost a lot of confidence during that time and I gradually just eroded,” Murray says of the background to her disappearance from the music scene. “Eventually, I had to surrender to the truth of the toxic situations I was finding myself in, both professionally and personally. No longer being stoic and strong was the best thing I ever did for myself. Giving up on the people and things that weren’t working in my life was this big emotional release. I could finally put down this weight I was carrying. Ever since then, things have been flowing in my life again. I can hear my intuition, write songs and be creative again; I signed a record deal, I moved into my own place. It’s like the floodgates opened for good stuff coming back into my life.”

With one listen to ‘Come Apart’ it is clear that Murray’s ability to create powerful, addictive, guitar drenched pop is stronger than ever and her return is something to be celebrated. The song is both a joy for existing fans and the perfect introduction to those who missed her the first time around. Plug this in and turn it up loud now.

‘Come Apart’ is out now. You can stream and download now.
