Today sees the return of New Zealand duo BROODS (brother and sister Georgia and Caleb Nott) with the single ‘Piece Of My Mind’, their first new music in two years.

The first single from their fourth studio album Space Island, ‘Piece Of My Mind’ is a glorious upbeat electropop track heavily dipped in dreamy synths, full of the glistening beats we have come to love from the Nott siblings. Sonically the song may be bright and carefree, but the lyrics tell a contrastingly dark story of grappling with mental health in a way that many can recognise after long lockdowns: “I've been here for seven months / Or maybe it’s just been a week / Nothing here to tell the time / Nothing here to see but me…I know I should face myself / But I don't really like my face” Georgia sings.

“‘Piece Of My Mind’ is the opening fanfare of Space Island,” Georgia says. “The song describes the many paradoxes we encounter when we try to escape our problems - the more we try to run away from our problems and ourselves, the more we are confronted with the aspects of each that we don’t like. ‘Piece of My Mind’ is the moment I start reasoning with myself at the crossroads - to figure out where I am, and what’s really at the heart of what I’m denying and trying to escape.”

BROODS worked on the single and upcoming album with producer Stint, who had previously worked with Carly Rae Jepsen and Mø. “With the production, we wanted to make it sound like you were on this kind of jet pack trip where everything is shifting, where you’re escaping to this unknown world called Space Island,” says Georgia.

Also released today is the epic video for ‘Piece Of My Mind’. Inspired by sci-fi B-movies yet gorgeously artistic, the video was shot on 35mm and 16mm film in the South Island of New Zealand and serves to bring BROODS’ fans into their world when touring the real world is not an option. “We wanted to do something really special, because we don't know when people are going to be able to go to live shows next,” Georgia say. “So we wanted to create this world that people could come and visit from wherever they are.”

After appearing earlier this year on Ladyhawke’s comeback single ‘Guilty Love’, BROODS’ return to music is proving to be one of the most exciting and anticipated of their career. With their signature style, creativity and ability to turn out flawless pop music BROODS are sure to one of your musical highlights as 2021 draws to a close.
