Mumbai born, Brisbane based Ash Lune today releases new single ‘Sugarcoat’ her first new music since the release of her debut EP Broken Science Experiments last month.

The song sees Lune embraces a whole new sound moving away from the lush, gentle balladry of her earlier releases and exploring a playful, poppier sound. Co-written with and produced by Sam de Jong (Robinson, Rudimental), tinkling piano gives way to funky, R&B beats and sublime vocals from Lune that effortlessly switch from half-spoken rap through to smooth trills. Lyrically, Lune sings about walking away from an unequal relationship: ‘Gave you my time / But you took none of mine / So I wrote about your lies and I put it up on Spotify’

"‘Sugarcoat’ shows a side of me that not many people know exists, which is cool,” Lune says. “I wrote this song with Sam de Jong over Zoom, and I was so nervous because I was already a fan of his work and it was overwhelming that he wanted to have a session with me. When we wrote this song, I was in the library/study room of a student accommodation in the city. There was barely any noise so I thought it would be perfect and professional. Now when I look back at that moment, I think about all the students I might've disturbed writing that song. ‘Sugarcoat’ started off as one song and ended as a whole other song. I like how it started but I loved how it ended.”

Also out today is the video for ‘Sugarcoat’. Directed by Ash Lim, it presents a disjointed, dreamscape aesthetic.

"It's a very interesting video about dreamscapes,” Lune explains. “Each set to me was an alternate dimension. We really wanted to do something abstract and show you all the different versions of Ash Lune, instead of keeping it unidimensional. I think you definitely see a lot more of my personality in this video. We all had a great time shooting this video."

Ash Lune has been one of Australia’s most promising new talents since she launched her music career last year with the single ‘Panic At The Party’. Her music is personal, moving and full of feels. ‘Sugarcoat’ is an exciting evolution in Lune’s music and is a joy to listen to, her musical journey is just starting and it is going to be an exciting one to watch.

‘Sugarcoat’ is out now. You can download and stream here.
