Mabel returns with new single 'January 19' and announces new mix tape will be released 25 July

One of the biggest pop stars to emerge from the UK in the last few years, Mabel has launched her new single ‘January 19’ and announces her self-titled mixtape will drop on 25 July.

Written by Mabel with Oscar Scheller and Syon, and produced by Scheller, the track has a glitchy R&B sound before soaring into a swirling, euphoric electronic pop chorus with multi-layered, distorted vocals.

The title references the day the song was written, which was also exactly one month before Mabel’s 29th birthday, and is a reflective look at getting older and realising some people are not worthy of you - be that in a relationship or professional setting. ‘You're not deserving of me / You're not deserving of my love’ she sings.

“I wrote this exactly one month before my 29th birthday and I was reflecting on another year around the sun,” Mabel says. “The process of writing this was a brain dump about the pressure that I’ve felt throughout my career. The need for approval is something that has eaten me up at times but now I’m in a place where I’m so comfortable just doing things for me!”

The single will feature on Mabel’s new self-titled mixtape that will be released on 25 July. Featuring nine tracks, it is her first project since 2022’s About Last Night… and has been recorded mainly in her home studio over the last few months. Featuring multiple genres, it’s main throughline is a return to the kind of music she made at the very beginning of her career and and a reflection on her ten years in music.

“The tape is all new music made in the last few months with some of my nearest and dearest. It’s really important to me with this project that people know that this is where I’m at now and I wanted it to come out without too much overthinking,” Mabel says. “It’s a blend of all the genres and cultures that make me who I am and I would say it’s beautiful organised chaos. It doesn’t have to make sense to everyone and I think it’s the first time in a long time I’ve been this unfiltered. There’s both a simplicity and a depth to the music that I love, in a way I just wrote it without too much thought but afterwards I realised it’s kind of a toxic love letter to my 10 years in the industry.”

First releasing music in 2015, Mabel’s breakthrough arrived in 2017 with the UK top 10 hit single ‘Finders Keepers’ and in 2019 her career exploded with the massive global hit ‘Don’t Call Me Up’. She has since accumulated over 4.5 billion streams and won Best British Female Solo Artist at the Brit Awards. ‘19 January’ and the upcoming Mabel mixtape serve as a reintroduction to her incredible talent and a reminder of why Mabel has been one of the biggest UK singers of the past decade.
