Jess Hitchcock releases new single 'On My Own' and announces new album 'Unbreakable' will be released in June

Australian singer-songwriter Jess Hitchcock has released her new single ‘On My Own’, which features on her new studio album Unbreakable which is due to be released on June 30.

‘On My Own’ begins with gentle piano before building into a beautiful if unconventional pop song with an insistent beat and some magnificent melodies. A truly mesmerising song, Hitchcock has a quality and a touch of otherworldliness to her voice that elevates the track further and brings it a timeless quality.

Lyrically ‘On My Own’ explores finding the strength to leave a bad relationship, acknowledging the hurt and pain but realising you are ultimately better off on your own. ‘I don’t want to be alone / I don’t want to do this on my own / But I know it’s time to go / I’d rather live my life on my own,” she sings.

“‘On My Own’ describes the battle of leaving a toxic relationship behind, even though you don’t want to be on your own. It’s a fun pop take on a heavy subject that will make you want to sing along with me,” Hitchcock says.

Hitchcock released her debut album Bloodline, inspired by her family origins in the Top Western Region of the Torres Strait and Papua New Guinea, in 2020. Its indie-folk sound marked her out as an artist to watch, and she has worked alongside some of Australia’s top artists including Tina Arena, Lisa Mitchell, Kate Miller-Heidke, Paul Kelly and Archie Roach. She has also worked with Deborah Cheetham at Australia’s Indigenous opera company, Short Black Opera for the past ten years.

‘On My Own’ follows February’s ‘I Don’t Have The Heart’ and both songs will appear on her second album Unbreakable. Featuring 9 tracks, the album will be released in June 30. Hitchcock will be performing songs from the album and Bloodline at the Four Winds Festival this weekend before touring Lady Sings Maroons with Opera Queensland.

Jess Hitchcock is an incredible talent and her latest single releases are bringing new sonics into her music that indicate Unbreakable is going to be a highly accomplished musical collection. If you haven’t added her already, Hitchcock is an artist to have an your playlist right now before more wonderful music arrives later this year.
