Emerging star Alice Ruby releases new single 'xx'
Published 15 December 2025
Rising Australian singer-songwriter Alice Ruby has released her latest single, the dreamy synthpop-lo-fi track ‘xx’.
Written by Ruby and produced with Edward Quinn (Telenova), ‘xx’ has shades of the 1980s new wave scene with a delicious lo-fi synth pop sound, mixed with a feeling of melancholy and yearning as Ruby sings of the “quiet anxieties” of modern romance. It explores the pressure to not be honest about exactly how you feel about someone, and instead hide that behind vague text messages. The unexpected but mesmerising swell of strings - performed by Ruby - towards the end of the song brings home the the despair of trying to cling to a relationship that deep down you know is slipping away: “I’m locked up in my head / With the shit I never said.”
Still only 21, Ruby started playing violin at the age of three, before moving onto guitar and songwriting. After completing her Bachelor of Music Composition and Film Studies she launched her career in April this year with the release of the dream pop single ‘December’. Two more singles, ‘Cellophane’ and ‘Hitch Hiking’ followed, and Ruby’s music was featured on Triple J and rage.
With its subtle move into a more moody, synth-pop sound, ‘xx’ showcases Ruby’s versatility as an artist and is a highpoint in her still developing career. Less than 12 months into her artist journey, Ruby is already showing she has everything it takes to become a major star. Stay tuned.
