RIIKI REID releases new single 'Meet U Again'
New Zealand rising star RIIKI REID, formerly known as RIIKI (real name Raquel Abolins-Reid) today releases her first new music of 2022 with the single ‘Meet U Again’.
The song is a delicious mix of indie-pop, R&B with a dash of synth and, perhaps appropriately as the world emerges from lockdowns, lyrically explores the sensation of wanting to recapture the intense feelings and excitement when you met that special person for the very first time.
“I hate when things don’t feel the same, and all I want is that tingly and exciting feeling when you first met,” Reid says. “The song is about longing for that, picturing yourself getting to meet each other all over again because it felt so good, fresh and exciting. I wrote this song in the first lockdown back in March 2020 nearly two years ago now. It was the song I wrote during that period that actually felt like an internal and emotional release. I wrote the entire song in one afternoon and then it was done, I closed my laptop lid, felt satisfied enough with the feeling of getting it all out that I left it at that, untouched with no need to do anything else with it”.
Also released today is the music video, directed by Robyn Jordaan. Referencing 1990s cult classic film Run Lola Run, the video sees Reid racing through a city at night. It also incorporates the Māori myth Pania of The Reef with Reid morphing into different parts of her identity with Pania as her alter ego before growing gills on her hands and neck as she makes her way to the ocean.
After releasing her first single in 2019, Reid has consistently proven she is one of New Zealand’s greatest new artists. Her second single ‘High Heights’ has collected over two millions streams on Spotify alone and 2020 single ‘Good Times’ hit number 1 on the Hot NZ Singles chart. She is the kind of artist that can authentically inhabit a variety of genres, with electronic pop, indie and R&B all forming part of her soundscape, and the future is looking increasingly bright for her. With ‘Meet U Again’ just the first taste of this new era of her career, expect even more incredible music from RIIKI REID in 2022.
