Swedish artist Anna Arco today releases her new single ‘Twenty-Eight’, the fourth single from her upcoming third studio album Songs from the Past which is due for release in September.

The song sees Arco embrace a country soundscape, with a shuffling beat paired with a gorgeous piano that threads its way throughout the track. Like the previous three singles from the new album, there is a more stripped back, earthy feel to the song as Arco experiments with a sound outside her normal synth driven alt-pop.

Despite its jaunty feel, ‘Twenty-Eight’ has a harrowing tale at its heart, as Arco sings of the unexpected death of her best friend several years ago. There is survivor’s guilt - ‘You were 28 the year you died / I was 27, but I survived,’ - as well as coming to terms with her loss: ‘Do not be sad that you once loved / That love will keep you going / Even in your darkest times / That love will be your light.’

"When my closest friend lay in the coma she would never wake up from again, a mourning cloak butterfly flew into my bedroom,” Arco says. “It’s a fairly rare butterfly here, and I had never seen one before. It truly felt like it was my friend coming to say goodbye. ‘Twenty-Eight’ is a song about what I believe she would have wanted to say to me that time."

‘Twenty-Eight’ follows the singles ‘Grasp’, ‘Wait’ and ‘You Let Go of Me So Easy’, all lifted from Songs From The Past. The album is a collection of acoustic tracks that were left over from Arco’s previous projects, and features stories of love, loss, grief and healing. Inspired by the music she grew up with, the album blends the sound of 1960s singer-songwriters with contemporary sonics in an indie-folk-pop-mix.

Arco is an artist that has a remarkable ability to explore the human spirit and emotions with an at times devastating accuracy. Her lyrics are complete, involving stories that make listening to her songs a fully immersive experience rather than just a quick blast of background music. With four gems in our ears already, Songs From The Past is an album that is already sounding like one of 2026’s musical highlights.

‘Twenty-Eight’ is out now via Spiltan Records. You can buy and stream here.
Songs From The Past will be released in September 2026.
