Australia’s Vera Blue has launched the next chapter ion her music with her stunning new single, ‘In The Corner’, her first major release in three years.
Ushering in a new sonic direction for Vera Blue, ‘In The Corner’ inhabits a late 1990s, trip hop-synth-electro sound that is breathtaking in both its production and scope. Written by Vera with Chis Collins (Matt Corby, Royel Otis) and Jono Ma (Jagwar Ma, Flight Facilities, Babe Rainbow), and produced by Collins and Ma, its multi-layered synth swirls and beats lay the foundation for a story of recovering from a setback and the empowerment it brings. ‘Sitting waiting for you / For you to fuck me up again / I'll stand back up…only fools play along’. The song builds into an electronic crescendo with Vera’s voice soaring before closing with a clash of sounds and distorted vocals.
“I poured every ounce of…energy into this track, not just for myself, but for every person who needs a soundtrack to their rebellion,” Vera Blue says. “And I use that word intentionally. Rebellion doesn’t have to be chaos; it can be clarity. It can be choosing peace on your own terms. It can be walking away with your head held high when someone thought you’d stay down. There’s something divine in reclaiming yourself. I feel it every time I sing this song — like a wildfire under my ribs. Like the kind of rage that blooms into something beautiful. Not destructive, but freeing. That’s what ‘In The Corner’ is, not just a protest, but a rebirth.”
While electronic pop has featured in Vera’s discography over her ten year career, after the release of her 2022 album Mercurial Vera was keen to work with entirely new collaborators and move her sound in a totally new direction.
“There was no formula, just jamming,” Vera says. “The studio became a playground of analogue synths, driving crunchy industrial beats, keys and electric guitar and warped autotuned vocal effects… Jono and Chris brought this gritty, physical energy to the production that pushed it into an industrial-dance realm I hadn't fully explored before.”
Also out now is the music video for ‘In The Corner’, directed by ARIA award-winning Grey Ghost (Troy Sivan, Tones & I, Ruel) and choreographed by Zoee Marsh (Mallrat, Telenova). It sees Vera barefoot and floating in mid air as she fights invisible, metaphoric battles
“I fight not against a villain, but against the weight of expectation, control, and the lingering voices that tried to cage me,” Vera says. “This is my release, a rebellion through movement, transforming my emotional turmoil into cinematic ritual. The clip is a raw, otherworldly journey through rage, resistance, and rebirth.“
To celebrate her return, Vera is currently planning her Pre Rituals tour, a series of intimate shows for June. More details will be released next week and you can sign up here to be the first to find out.
After releasing her first single in 2015, Vera Blue has consistently released meticulously crafted, elevated pop music that is both emotionally powerful and melodically thrilling. It is music that instantly connects but also remains unique and slightly left of field, standing out from the crowd. ‘In The Corner’ is no different, and an exploration of new sounds has only solidified her remarkable talent. Her return to music is one of the highlights of 2025 and her upcoming music looks set to be her most impressive yet.
‘In The Corner’ is out now via Island Records. You can download and stream here.
