Superstar Tate McRae has returned with her first new music in over a year with new single ‘Housewife’.

Written with pop heavyweights Julia Michaels and Ryan Tedder, ‘Housewife’ is a pulsing pop song with a almost dreamy feel and a deceptively simple soundscape which on subsequent listens reveals multiple, gorgeous layers of vocals and electronic trills.

The song is an exploration of love, fame, wealth and independence. McRae turns the concept of the sexist trope of what a housewife is - a kept woman - on its head by declaring she can be a housewife, but one of her own choosing and with her own power. ‘I just wanna make a lot of money, be my own housewife…And you right beside me's just the icing on the dream / I don't need you, I want you, and that's my favourite thing,’ she sings.

Also out now is the music video for ‘Housewife’. Filmed in the south of France it was directed by Pierre-Ange Carlotti and choreographed by Sergio Reis (Madonna, Miley Cyrus, Charli XCX). Featuring McRae dancing on a boat and a mansion, while flirting with different men, she ultimately chooses her own independence over love after a tabloid newspaper features her on the cover with the sexist headline ‘Is a woman this ambitious marriage material?’

Tate McRae first released music in 2017 and has steadily become a global superstar with each new release. She has over 29 billion global streams and earlier this year her artistry was recognised with her first ever Grammy nomination, in the Best Dance Pop Recording category for her ‘Just Keep Watching’ single.

‘Housewife’ is McRae’s first new music since the release of her third album So Close To What last year. That album became her biggest chart hit to date, hitting number 1 in the US and Australia, and number 2 in the UK. With her fourth album rumoured to be on the way, more incredible music from McRae won’t be far away and if it is anything like ‘Housewife’, McRae will continue to shine as one of pop’s greatest artists into 2027.

‘Housewife’ is out now via RCA Records/Sony Music. You can buy and stream here.
