PREMIERE: Watch video for Thandi Phoenix's latest single 'Ready' from new EP 'Rebirth'
South African-Australian singer-songwriter Thandi Phoenix has gone through a period of immense change and upheaval over the past 18 months, losing family members, going through a breakup and walking away from her major label record deal.
Tomorrow she returns with her first EP as an independent artist, appropriately titled REBIRTH. A collection of music that explores self-discovery, growth, and evolution the themes are soundtracked by a gorgeous mix of genres from the Afrobeats of ‘Banathi’, the disco funk of first single ‘Hot Sauce’ and the electro-house of ‘Take It Back’ and ‘Space’.
As a taster to the EP, today you can exclusively watch the video for Phoenix’s latest single, EP opener ‘Ready’ on Women In Pop. A shimmering, electronic pop track with touches of R&B and house, it is a declaration from Phoenix on this next chapter of both her life and musical career: “You bet I’m ready” she sings.
The music video, which sees Phoenix in multiple different guises and outfits, was directed by Alessandro Zotti and shot in just one day.
“‘Ready’ is the final single off my first independently released EP REBIRTH and is all about embracing change and stepping into the unknown,” Phoenix says. “I called upon Alessandro Zotti to direct the clip and we collaborated with an incredible collective of young creatives from Eora/Sydney to bring its essence to life. We wanted to depict this evolution and transformation through the bold contrasts in styling, lighting and set design. Dripping in some incredible Australian designers such as Youkhana, Dinosaur Designs, Ksubi, Minming Zhou, Caroline Reznik, GINN styled by Laura Mazikana. Makeup was by Annabelle Ussher and set design by Dexter. The whole crew turned it out over the space of a day at Studio Killa in Marrickville.”
To celebrate the release of the REBIRTH EP Phoenix will be performing in Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney from the end of July, tickets on sale now.
