Melbourne/Naarm artist Jazz Johnston has spent the last few years performing with artists such as Gabriella Cohen, The Slingers and Mature Themes and now fronts the four piece rock-pop band Jeane.

Today Jeane officially launch their debut single ‘Emotional Baby’ with an exclusive premiere on Women In Pop before its general release tomorrow.

Described as the love child of Blondie and Beck, ‘Emotional Baby’ is a gorgeous, dreamy and a little bit psychedelic mix of pop, rock and indie with a alluring vocal performance from Johnston that moves from disdain through to floating into a higher register.

Lyrically the song is a wry look at the stereotype that women are overly emotional and as a result cannot be taken seriously. “I’m irrational baby / Must be that time of year,” Johnston sings with an almost audible eye-roll.

“‘Emotional Baby’ is a cheeky mantra I wrote when I was going through a hard time,” Johnston says. “I was listening to a lot of Beck and Donna Summer, music that’s epic with its cinematic string arrangements, wild dirty guitar tones, cool synthesisers and intricate production. I wanted to play with the idea of how women get typecast as over-emotional, in a very tongue-in-cheek, epic rock and roll way.”

‘Emotional Baby’ is a gem of a track and showcases Jeane as a band to watch. With an unusual structure that is both low-key and powerful, it manages to hook you in from the first listen and you will want to return again and again. Take a listen now below before its official release tomorrow, and jump right into the world of Jeane.

‘Emotional Baby’ is released on November 2. You can pre-save here.

To keep up with all things Jeane you can follow them on Instagram, Facebook and TikTok.

The ‘Emotional Baby’ single launch will be held at Shotkickers in Melbourne on November 9. Tickets on sale now.
