PREMIERE: Indy Stanton returns with new single 'Like Me'

Adelaide based singer-songwriter Indy Stanton returns tomorrow with her first new song in almost a year ‘Like Me’ but today you can listen to it exclusively here on Women In Pop.

The song is a self-deprecating, lush pop track with a shuffling beat that was inspired by a fear Stanton developed that she was the type of person to mess up every person she had a relationship with.

“This song is something really new for me. I had an ex who told me I was a total psychopath; and I believed it,” Stanton says. “After we had broken up and I started dating again, I kept hearing her voice in my head telling me I was crazy and too messed up to be dating anyone. Suddenly, I had the idea that I needed to ‘warn’ anyone who was interested in me. I had to give them a total breakdown of what they would be signing up for. I finally came to the conclusion that I wasn’t necessarily crazy, I was just reacting to a really wild situation. I’ve dated since then and I’ve come to see that I am okay, it was just a really unhealthy relationship – but it was kinda fun and cathartic to describe myself from her point of view, and that’s what I’ve done with this song. It’s also a super empowering feeling to use phrases that she’s used and no longer believe them when I hear them.”

Working on the track with producer Sam Morrison (aka Supanever), Stanton says the track has been born from more pure pop influences that her previous releases. “The songs influences are definitely a bit more ‘pop’ to what I’ve released in the past. I had the awesome opportunity to work with a producer who had a bit of a different sound, and he really took this song to the next level,” she says. “I was definitely inspired by Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande but also, I’ve been really getting into Little Mix lately, and a lot of the millennial hits from my childhood so really the sound is just a total mix and mash of me as an artist and I love it.”

Stanton began her music career while still at high school posting covers on YouTube, and in 2018 released her debut album The Candle Room, which was a beguiling mix of indie pop scattered with synth and electro vibes. Stanton and her music have a charm and relatability, alongside some pretty amazing melodies, that are irresistible and it is great to have her back. Look out for its official release tomorrow, but today enjoy your first listen to ‘Like Me’ below.
