Australia’s Jessica O’Donoghue trained as a classical singer and has performed as a principal artist and soloist across multiple operas and tours for Opera Australia, as well as spending four months as a guest Young Artist at The Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London.

Alongside her opera career she has also worked in pop, including performing as the lead vocalist for the ARIA nominated group CODA.

This Friday she releases her new single ‘La Rosa’ but today you can listen to it exclusively on Women In Pop. An otherworldly, ethereal single that mixes opera with electronica and synth, it is a remarkable track that takes you on a journey and highlights what an incredible voice O’Donoghue has.

"‘La Rosa’ is essentially my own arrangement (or remix!) of the traditional Sephardic folk song ‘La Rosa Enflorece’”, O’Donoghue says. “Ancient sephardic music has always resonated so deeply with me and has been a strong influence on my composition practice ever since I sang with The Renaissance Players back in my uni days. I love how it is full of yearning and passion. I wanted to take this folk song which has so much tragic romance, and really bring it into my own world. My version is slightly dark and a little contorted, but the song holds so much beauty in its original form, I really loved the feeling of layering it with a bit of dark torment. It really encapsulates my experience of painful love, longing and lost happiness."

‘La Rosa’ is a tantalising taste of more music to come from O’Donoghue this year, take a listen below before its general release on Friday.

‘La Rosa’ will be released on 8 July. You can pre-order and pre-save here.
