Natalie Imbruglia returns with new single 'Upside Down' from upcoming new album 'Algorithm'

Australian-British music legend Natalie Imbruglia returns today with her first new music in five years with the single ‘Upside Down’. It is the first taste of her seventh studio album Algorithm, released on 4 September.
Written and produced by Imbruglia with Anu Pillai and David Sneddon, ‘Upside Down’ is a sparkling, jangly pop track shot through with synths and guitars, in many places giving a throwback feel to late 1990s-early 2000s pop. The sunny soundscape hides a darker meaning within the lyrics as Imbruglia struggles with her mental health and fighting through a sense of shame that comes with that: ‘I’m a mess / Heavy on my chest…this is all I’ve known / Gravity take hold / Drags me down like stones / To darker tones’. The song ultimately becomes empowering as Imbruglia finds peace within herself - ‘I think I’ve found my upside down / Where there was nothing now there’s nothing but colour and sound’
“The inability to control my emotions, wrestling with fight or flight mode, was awful, and I was reaching this critical point with it,” Imbruglia says. “In a way, the song is about how sheer willpower – trying to force your way out of something – doesn’t always work. You need tools, support. So that’s where the song was born from, that fight to maintain a semblance of what some might consider normality.”
Algorithm, released 4 September, is Imbruglia’s first album since 2021’s Firebird which hit the top 10 on the UK albums chart. Funded entirely independently, Imbruglia co-produced and co-wrote all 11 songs, collaborating with major creators including MyRiot (London Grammar), David Sneddon (Lana Del Rey, Hurts), Fraser T Smith (Adele, Dave, Stormzy, Sam Smith) and Snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody.
The album will see Imbruglia move towards the dancefloor, with a more pop, disco and house influenced soundscape. Extremely personal, the lyrics see Imbruglia find her own power, freedom and creative fulfilment.
“On this record I chose to work with collaborators who also co-produce, so from start to finish we were all so invested in every song,” she says. “I really hope that people get as much joy from listening to this record as we did making it. And that they dance their arses off. This was by far the most fun I’ve ever had making a record. It also happened to coincide with the most challenging time I’ve had with my mental health. This is the beauty of music and artistic expression. You can take something dark and turn it into light.”
One of the world’s most successful artists at the turn of the century, Imbruglia’s 1997 hit ‘Torn’ has earned iconic status, and springboard her to major international acclaim. She has scored 5 top 20 albums in the UK, earned two BRIT Awards, three Grammy nominations, a Silver Clef and eight ARIA Awards, with her debut album Left of the Middle selling over seven million copies worldwide. She now opens the next chapter of her remarkable career with what feels like her most intriguing and captivating music to date.
