ARIA Award nominated MAY-A today releases the next slice of her new musical chapter ‘(I’m Here For The) GIRLS’, following up September’s ‘{REDACTED]’, her first new music in over two years.
While ‘[REDACTED]’ saw MAY-A embrace a pop-punk-rock sound, on ‘(I’m Here For The) GIRLS’ she leans into an euphoric, electro-synth-pop anthem with an underlying current of electric guitar rock. Celebrating queer love and desire, MAY-A’s lyrics are both sexy and wry as she stakes out exactly what she wants - and what she doesn't. ‘I need her religiously / I think that she’s into me…sending boys into panic.’
MAY-A also brings cheeky references to music of the past decades in her lyrics and melodies, with a shout out to the Red Hot Chilli Pepper’s hit 1991 album Blood Sugar Sex Magik while the refrain ‘girls on girls’ sounds almost like a reclaimation and repurposing of the 1981 Duran Duran hit ‘Girls On Film’.
“This song was created because I felt like the album writing process was getting quite heavy and serious and I needed some kind of sense of relief and fun,” MAY-A says. “I wanted to go for a guitar-led dance song, something that felt kind of reminiscent of late 2000s Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs and a mix of early Calvin Harris stuff. We were just having fun and writing something stupid and less intense than the other tracks.”
After the release of ‘(I’m Here For The) GIRLS’, MAY-A will be performing with Junipero at the Burdekin in Sydney on 8 November. Abby and Tyrone from Triple J will also appear, as well as a number of surprise guests to be revealed on the night. Tickets are on sale now here. Her next live performance will be at Rolling Sets in Tweed Heads on 29 November, followed by the Central Coast on 6 December. Tickets on sale now here.
Critical and commercial acclaim for MAY-A has steadily grown since she first released music in 2019. The winner of an APRA Award from four nominations and recipient of five ARIA Award nominations, she scored a global hit in 2022 with her featured appearance on Flume’s ‘Say Nothing’. Last year she supported Glass Animals on their Australian tour, and earlier this year was handpicked by pop icon Cyndi Lauper to sing her classic hit ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’ on stage at her Sydney show. ‘(I’m Here For The) GIRLS’ is the latest high point in MAY-A’s ever evolving artistry and augurs well for her future releases.
‘(I’m Here For The) GIRLS’ is out now via Sony Music Australia. You can download and stream here.
