UK duo Everything But The Girl (Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt) have released new single ‘Run A Red Light’, the third taste of their upcoming comeback album Fuse, released April 21.

A sparse, stripped back piano-electronica track, ‘Run A Red Light’ is a gorgeous contrast to the upbeat trance-club feel of their previous two singles ‘Nothing Left To Lose’ and ‘Caution To The Wind’. Thorn’s vocals are husky and intimate, endlessly expressive, standing out against a gentle piano and electronic bursts of sound. Lyrically the song tells a story of night life culture, and performers who are convinced their big break is imminent but use bravado to cover their insecurity.

"I met a lot of characters during my years in clubland," Watt says. "I wrote this song about the guy at the end of the night, who dreams his big moment is just around the corner. All the bravado and good intentions masking the vulnerability."

Also out now is the music video for ‘Run A Red Light’, directed by Charlie Di Placido.
"The video is like a dream of the story," says Thorn. "We've found with this record that choreography can express the emotion in our music without having to be too literal. The characters, the clothes, the movement, the direction all just fit. Charlie and his team really get the feelings we're going for. It's been a great collaboration."

Everything But The Girl formed in 1982 and found success in their native UK with a mix of folk, pop and jazz. After multiple hit albums and singles in the UK, in 1995 Everything But The Girl became one of the biggest bands on the planet when a dance remix of their 1994 single ‘Missing’ exploded, hitting number 3 in the UK, and number 2 in the US and Australia. The band switched their sound to electronica and their 1996 album Walking Wounded was highly acclaimed, becoming their first platinum album in the UK. After breaking up several years later in 2000, both Thorn and Watt pursued solo careers. In 2021 they decided to reunite as Everything But The Girl and recording in secret, they created their 11th studio album Fuse, which is due for release on April 21.

One of the great innovators of pop, Everything But The Girl create music that has always been brazenly unique and experimental whilst still remaining familiar and relatable. With Thorn’s remarkable voice, their lyrics which tap into your emotions and well as read like poetry, and the mesmerising beats and melodies, Everything But The Girl are everything you could possibly want in a pop band and their return is undoubtedly one of the highlights of 2023.
