Darcie Haven releases captivating second single 'Coping'

Perth based singer-songwriter Darcie Haven today releases her second single, ‘Coping’, the follow up to her debut single ‘I Wanna Be’, which brought her critical acclaim and marked her as an artist to watch.

Written by Haven and produced by Aidan Hogg (G Flip, Hatchie, Eves Karydas), ‘Coping’ is a beguiling, mellow pop ballad that gradually builds its soundscape with an insistent beat and ethereal backing vocals, topped off by a beautifully gentle vocal performance from Haven.

The lyrics are melancholic and heartbreaking and explore the sensation of feeling overwhelmed, lost and empty at key transitional moments in your life. ‘Got a lot of baggage for kids our age / Sick of tryna learn how to let things change / Let me fall on this hard wooden floor,” she sings.

“I wrote this song coming out of the first few lockdowns, feeling a little lost, overwhelmed, and reflective,” Haven says. “I didn’t know who I was out of school, and being thrown in and out of isolation was quite jarring. I felt myself thinking too deeply about everything, purely because there was nothing else to do. Everything around me felt pretty grey, everyone was competing over who was worse off, but it was also the time I realised nothing really matters more than the people you love. Lockdowns were yucky (to say the absolute least), but at least they forced you into holding your family and friends close.”

Haven also today releases the music video for ‘Coping’, her first ever video release. Shot in just one take, it is intimate and keeps the focus purely on Haven.

“This was my first ever music video, so it was sort of the birth of my visual artist aesthetic,” Haven says. “It was so much fun finding a setting that I felt perfectly reflected me; a balance of rural, retro, grunge-y goodness. It took a lot of pestering everyone I know to find that hidden gem of an abandoned petrol station. I think the visuals that accompany a song are super important, and so in ‘Coping’’s case I wanted the video to help cement the atmosphere and vibe I was channelling while making the song; a melancholic, intimate beginning that expands into some big sweeping moments at the end” she explains.

Just two singles into her career, Haven is emerging as a seriously talented young performer who has the potential to go a long way. Her music has a grace and a timelessness to it, as well as being filled with such warmth and emotion that you feel intimately connected to it. Music to really immerse yourself in, this is an artist to get excited about and we can’t wait to hear more from her.
