Dagny announces release of debut album and releases new single 'It's Only A Heartbreak'

Norway’s Dagny has today announced she will release her debut album Strangers/Lovers on October 2. The album has been a long worked for dream of Dagny and comes four years after her breakout hit ‘Backbeat’ in 2016. Reflecting the divide of the title, the album is split into two halves, each dealing with different parts of a relationship - Side A is the more upbeat part of the album, celebrating love and the buzz of the early period of a relationship, whilst side B is more introspective, a little more melancholic after the relationship has changed or broken down. Side A was released in its entirety in May, with the carefree and joyous singles ‘Come Over’ and ‘Somebody’ perfectly encapsulating the endorphin rush of new love, but also showcasing Dagny’s total embrace of electro/synth pop. Both songs are evidence that Dagny is creating some of the best music of her career.

Alongside the album announcement, today Dagny also releases the first single from Side B of the album ‘It’s Only A Heartbreak’. A sparse, yet frenetic electro track, it explores the emotions of still holding a flame for an ex even though the relationship is well and truly over. “‘It's Only A Heartbreak’ is actually partly inspired by the classic movie "Casablanca" from 1942, and Humphrey Bogart's famous quote: "Here's looking at you, kid’” Dagny says. “Like the movie, the song is about knowing that you will never get someone back, but you can secretly still look at, and admire, that certain someone. The song carries a nonchalant expression, but the undertone makes it pretty obvious that you're not over that person yet."

Strangers/Lovers looks set to be one of the pop music’s highlights of 2020 and while it was a long road to Dagny’s debut album, it is well worth the wait. “Being able to release music and playing shows is how I feel happy doing what I do. I would call that successful,” she says. “I need to try and not think too much about what this album is going to do, but remember how it all happened, the good times we had making it, the people I met while making it, the emotions that I tried to convey and whether I feel good. It needs to go and live its own life.”

‘It’s Only A Heartbreak’ is out now via Little Daggers Records. You can download on iTunes and stream on Apple Music and Spotify.
