BIRDEE王煒 shares new single 'Self Sabotage'

Eora/Sydney based singer-songwriter BIRDEE王煒 today releases her first new music of 2023 with the single ‘Self Sabotage’.

A stirring, cinematic track that begins as an acoustic track before erupting into a moody, electronic chorus, it is a remarkable song that, with Birdee’s powerful, emotive vocal, really grabs the feels. Lyrically, it speaks of struggling to accept a healthy relationship after far too many toxic ones.

“Having my fair share of toxic relationships and moments of self doubt, it’s hard to comprehend and accept someone who gives you unconditional pure love,” she says. “It is the struggle of loving how they treat you yet feeling unworthy of it.”

Also out today is the music video for ‘Self Sabotage’, directed by James K Lewis and Skye Jackson with choreography by Clayton Webb, Ethan Barrett and Connor Willis. “One thing I really enjoyed about the music video was all the creative minds entwining and coming together to create this vision,” Birdee王煒 says. ‘To see how many individuals it takes to create an overall piece of art is unbelievable.”

Drawing on her Chinese, Greek and Russian heritage to create sounds and stories of her own, Birdee王煒 grew up in rural Parkes before moving to Eora/Sydney. ‘Self Sabotage’ follows on from last year’s summer release ‘Poolside’ and her debut EP Can’t Be Loved. Last year she travelled to UK, Europe and LA and played three shows at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where she won a Mervyn Stutter ‘Pick Of The Fringe’ Gold Star.

With a remarkable ability to channel the vulnerability and emotional experiences of adolescence moving into adulthood, Birdee王煒 creates music that is emotive, warm, relatable but also a huge bundle of fun, with soundscapes including electronica, disco, indie and rock-pop. An important young talent that you should watch very closely, Birdee王煒 has kicked off 2023 in style and she has everything it takes to become a major star.
