Boorloo/Perth independent artist Tanaya Harper is as much at home with jangly, uncluttered, delicious indie-pop as she is with moody, melancholic ballads with an incredibly emotional core.

On Wednesday May 1, she will release her first new music of 2024 with the single ‘Night Terrors’ and today you can listen to it exclusively on Women In Pop.

Produced and mixed by Andrew Lawson, Harper also worked with composer and orchestral arranger Jared Yapp on the track, and ‘Night Terrors’ is a lush, moving song that takes on a cinematic and dramatic hue with the inclusion of beautiful strings that build with intensity throughout the song. The soundscape is the perfect companion to the lyrics which tell a story of feeling trapped in an unfulfilling relationship but struggling to find the way out: ‘Five years is too long to wait / And maybe I'll be waiting again, but can I do that?’

“'Night Terrors’ is a very special song to me. It was the first track that I wrote with a cinematic classical arrangement in mind, of which Jared Yapp executed perfectly,” Harper says. “The lyrics are heavily centred around my growing understanding of how I was allowing for unhealthy dynamics to unfold within romantic relationships, and although I was becoming more aware of them, I hadn’t yet moved into a space where I was ready to change my ways.”

Harper has become a major talent on the West Australian music scene, receiving multiple West Australian Music Industry Awards (WAMi) nominations, as well as founding the supergroup Bells Rapids with Stella Donnelly. She released her first solo music in 2018, and her highly anticipated debut album They Have Become Me is due for release later this year.

Inspired by her experiences living with Bipolar disorder, and with her sound drawing on folk, indie and alternative rock, Harper’s music never fails to move you. Listen to ‘Night Terrors’ exclusively below before its general release on May 1.

‘Night Terrors’ will be released in May 1. You can pre-save here.
