Emalia releases debut EP 'Unmuted'

Australia’s rising R&B superstar Emalia today releases her debut EP Unmuted.

A glorious collection of nine tracks of near perfect R&B-pop that overflow with raw emotion, heart and relatable lyrics, this is really special music that winds around your soul and doesn’t let go.

Representing Emalia’s life over the past few years, each track represents a separate chapter in her life, joined by spoken word and sampled interludes. “Unmuted is my metaphorical megaphone finally being turned on,” Emalia says. “It’s about the moments you say the things you couldn’t before. I am finally able to share the beginning of my story and my voice with you, and I hope it helps someone out there to do the same.”

The EP contains Emalia’s previous singles ‘Suga Rush and ‘IOU’ along with the remarkable ‘Mistake’ which looks back at the loss of a first love. “We ended it, I missed him, I learned to live without him, I owned my mistakes and grew from them,” she says. “After a while, I was able to look back and recognise the part I played in the relationship and how to do better next time. This is one of my favourites on the EP.”

Also on the EP is new single ‘Messy’, a sassy track with a smooth beat and gorgeous vocal dexterity. The song sees Emalia explore anger and regret. “‘Messy’ was my epiphany that I dodged a bullet,” Emalia says. “I saw an ex-flame, heard about the things he gets up to nowadays, and realised I don’t have to put up with that anymore. I caught a partner doing wrong by me, I called him out on his BS, and got the heck out of there. In my experience, it’s incredibly freeing to remove yourself from a toxic situation and later gain a new, clearer perspective on someone.”

Other new music on the EP includes ‘Women’s Intuition’ which was inspired by the moment Emalia realised a former partner was cheating on her: ‘Don’t you bother confessing / Cause you can’t fuck with a women’s intuition’ she sings. False Advertising’ speaks about the versions of ourselves we let others see, and the importance of learning “to love and be comfortable with who you really are, and always show that unapologetically.”  EP closer ‘DNA’ is an honest introspection into Emalia’s battle with mental health: ‘All the voices in my head that say you’ll never be good enough.’

Emalia first appeared on the music scene in 2019 with the release of the single ‘Prima Donna’, a brooding R&B track dripping with attitude. She has since released a number of singles to growing critical acclaim and recently headlined the first ever Women In Pop Live concert at Oxford Art Factory.

With a debut music collection this strong, polished and assured, the future for Emalia is incredibly bright. This is an artist who really has it all - the sound, the voice, the charisma - and it is not a stretch to say Emalia can easily stand shoulder to shoulder with some of the world’s top-tier artists. Trust us, you need this singer on your radar now.

Unmuted is out now via Sony Music Australia. You can buy and stream here.
