Swedish superstar Zara Larsson has released her new single ‘Midnight Sun’ and announced the album of the same name will be released on 26 September. In addition, Larsson will be performing her first ever live shows in Australia next February.

Written by Larsson with frequent collaborator MNEK, Helena Gao and Margo XS, ‘Midnight Sun’ is a trippy, trancey electronic pop song with a beat that changes pace from skittering to driving and forceful. The song is an ode to summer, a season where everything feels more heightened, and the romances - either long term or short term - that ensue.

“Summer isn't over yet / Skinny-dipping with your heart out, it's my favourite part / Now we ain't gotta tell no one,” she sings.

‘Midnight Sun’ follows ‘Pretty Ugly’ that launched Larsson’s new era of music in April. Both songs will feature on her fifth studio album Midnight Sun which is due to be released on 26 September. The ten tracks see Larsson work with MNEK, Helena Gao, Zhone and Margo XS and reflects the artistry and growth Larsson has seen over her 20 year music career which started when she won Talang (Sweden’s version of the Got Talent franchise) when she was just 11 years old. Reflecting on that 20 year journey, the album sees Larsson in many ways celebrating her roots.

“In thinking about this album, I thought, ‘What do I want to say? What do I want this to be?’ I really am proud of my Swedish pop heritage, so I wanted to write about a Swedish summer where the sun never goes down,” Larsson says. “I wanted the whole album to feel like it's a summer night and it never ends. And it doesn't matter if it's December: the summer night will be there for you. It's waiting for you, it will come back for you, and you will come back for it.”

The announcement of the Midnight Sun album follows the news that Larsson will play her first ever shows in Australia next year when she supports OneRepublic on their Australian and New Zealand tour. Beginning in Auckland on 4 February, she will perform seven shows in Australia wrapping up in Perth on 18 February. Tickets are on sale now.

Not just one of pop’s most consistent artists, Larsson is one of the most important performers of her generation with her ability to mix joyful and experimental pop with one of music’s strongest feminist activism. Midnight Sun promises to be her greatest work yet and is guaranteed to fulfil its brief of bringing the euphoria and bliss of summer throughout the whole end of the year.
