VIDEO PREMIERE: Ally Palmer teams up with okmattcollins on new single 'Can I Be Yours Tonight?'

Singer-songwriter Ally Palmer recently teamed up with fellow Byron Bay musician okmattcollins (also known as WHARVES frontman Matt Collins) to write and release the single ‘Can I Be Yours Tonight?’. Today the music video premieres exclusively on Women In Pop before it’s general release tomorrow.

The song is a mellow, heartfelt laid back slice of surf pop with Palmer’s tender vocals almost floating above a gentle, sparking background. It is the type of song that instantly relaxes you as well as creeping into your heart, leaving you reaching for the repeat button.

‘Can I Be Yours Tonight’ is the latest release from Palmer who was previously a touring keyboardist for a range of bands and artists before deciding to strike out on her own as a solo artists in 2016. She has since released several EPs and performed at 2017’s Byron Bay Bluesfest.

The collaboration with Collins was born when Palmer was preparing for her album and looking for more material. “I was lucky enough to work with Collins when creating my album back in 2020,” she says. “I was talking to him and we were searching for fresh ideas for the album when he just started playing this beautiful chord progression on his acoustic guitar. Our voices and songwriting just gelled so nicely together.”

In the music video that you can watch exclusively below, Palmer and Collins perform the song in what looks like an empty night club, their emotions and movement restrained and emotionless, the lack of action making the video all the more hypnotic.

“The song ‘Can I Be Yours Tonight?’ Is a romantic love song so we wanted to portray that in the film clip,” Palmer says. “The place where we filmed the clip was actually someone’s living room, it was such a cool space with retro furniture, old guitars and other collectibles. The space gave the clip a romantic, old school, artistic feel which is exactly what we were looking for.”

Collins adds: "The original inspiration for the video came from Courtney Barnett's performance of "Depreston" on Jimmy Fallon's tonight show and the film crew (Zac, Adele and Karl) found an amazing venue in the Byron Bay Industrial Estate which gave it more of a vintage class with the candles, red curtains and soft lighting. We wanted it to be gentle and understated though just like the song and I feel that's what was achieved"

Watch the video below exclusively on Women In Pop before its general release on March 15.
