THEIA releases new mixtape '99% Angel'
New Zealand’s alt-pop queen Theia today releases her new mixtape 99% Angel. It comes hot on the heels of the release of the final single, ‘Celebrity’, which is also released today with its video premiering on the prestigious Billboard website.
Set to the type of adventurous soundscape we have come to expect from Theia, there are moments of guitar rock, electropop and dance beats all held together with Theia’s unique, expressive vocals. It’s a total rush of a track that makes you want to instantly hit repeat. “It’s all about the idea of selling your soul to the cult of celebrity - people who would do anything to be seen as famous or successful even if it means losing themselves in the process,” Theia says.
The music video sees Theia as a latter day Miss Havisham in a fantasy universe inhabited by elves. Shot in LA by Nas Nixx she says, “My vision for the video was for this elf-like girl to be tainted by groupies and the glam Hollywood, as she transforms into a succubus.” Theia adds, “The greed takes her soul; she’s surrounded by groupies but she’s still lonely.”
‘Celebrity’ follows the tracks ‘Kitty Kat’, ‘Frat Boyz’ and ‘99% Angel’ and continues the theme of Theia’s powerful messages about society encased in addictive pop beats. ‘Kitty Kat’ takes aim at the way society dehumanises and degrades women, particularly online: ‘Call me a slut when I dress like that…karma comes around because this kitty bites back’, while ‘Frat Boyz’ blasts the patriarchy: ‘I am the new era / Does my ego scare you…this bitch don’t fear you.”
To celebrate the release of 99% Angel Theia will be staging the 99% Angel Cyber Zoom Party on May 24 (AEST/NZ). Theia will perform the mixtape back-to-back, with Australian DJ/producer Oh Boy; LA-based artist Gurldoll; NZ-based artist Babyzionov and US DJ Deathbysanrio all on the bill.
