Australia’s Sloan Peterson recently released her second new track of 2021 with the single ‘Parasite’ and today she releases the music video directed by Stephanie Jane Day.

‘Parasite’ was written with and co-produced by Lime Cordiale and is a breezy, swinging joyful pop song with a delicious soundscape which continually surprises and enthrals with beats, harmonies and unexpected changes of pace. It’s bright and cheery surface disguises a story that is far more darker - a relationship that has turned toxic: “Get lost, don't turn up when you want to / I'm lonely, but not for you…Lying if I said you're not a parasite,” Peterson sings.

“There are people who can be taken advantage of in life, maybe they are people pleasers or have self-doubt,” Peterson explains. “But then there are the opposite people who don’t have a grasp on how their behaviour could be affecting others. That’s kinda what parasite is about, being taken advantage of and being sick of it.”

The video sees Peterson taking revenge on her ‘parasite’ as she methodically and gleefully destroys his apartment. “My work delights in the restraint, control and calculation often required of a woman in the world today,” the video’s director Stephanie Jane Day says. “‘Parasite’ the music video takes this control to the next level, with Sloan methodically destroying her boyfriend's luxe upper east side apartment. It's chaotic, cathartic and speaks to the often-maddening side of relationships. And yes, Sloan really did tear apart my laptop.”

Sloan Peterson has been exploring her musicality since she was a child and at aged 19 she made a name for herself in the Sydney music scene as the frontswoman for punk band the Black Zeros. After travelling to New York with another musical project, Sloan Peterson was born as a band in 2017, leading to a support gig with The Kooks on tour in 2019. Since the beginning of the Sloan Peterson project, it has evolved from its indie rock base into a poppier sound inflected with soul, jazz and R&B. “It's a very different project now to what it was before,” says Sloan. “It's more personal too. I’m writing from experience about relationships, hurt, family and misunderstandings.”

Expect more incredible new music from Sloan Peterson throughout 2021 with her new EP expected to be released later this year. Until then, soak in the delights of ‘Parasite’ below.
