Jack River releases new single 'Lie In The Sun'

Australia’s Jack River (real name Holly Rankin) has released her new single ‘Lie In The Sun’, the fourth taste from her upcoming second album Endless Summer.

Written with John Ryan (Harry Styles, Katy Perry, Nick Jonas) and produced with Josh Fountain (BENEE, Alison Wonderland, Jarryd James), ‘Lie In The Sun’ is a bright and bubbly pop song with a heady beat and psychedelic 1960s feels, with spacey, distorted vocals from Rankin completing the picture. It is a delicious romp of a song, but like everything on Endless Summer there is a darker message of the ongoing climate crisis, an apocalyptic holiday of blissfully floating in the sea while the sky is on fire around you.

“I wrote ‘Lie In The Sun’ with John Ryan, a hilarious New Yorker who I met at a writing camp in Byron, Rankin says. “Over lunch, we were asking my publisher about her youth - what she got up to with friends in the suburbs, and what kind of slang they would use to describe going out and getting wasted with friends - she told us they’d say ‘we’re going to lie in the sun’. We were both fascinated and dreamt of a psych night scene, a fluorescent acid world of 70s youth. And so ‘Lie in the Sun’ was born. Josh and I layered vocals upon vocals, reversed and twisted sounds, turned things upside down. Within the production there is a story of obscuring what is real, so it doesn’t feel as harsh anymore.”

Endless Summer, the second Jack River album, will be released on June 16, the follow up to her ARIA nominated 2019 debut Sugar Mountain. Inspired by the 1960s psychedelic sound that offered the concept of a safe haven in a rapidly changing world, the album is described as an escapist’s dream, a retreat from the 21st century world of climate disaster that weighed heavily on Rankin’s mind while she was creating the album.

With over 66 million streams to her name, Jack River is one of the most important musicians to appear on the Australian music scene in the last few years, lending her voice to and bringing attention to important social causes alongside creating some of the most delicious pop music around. An always mesmerising artist, Endless Summer is destined to become one of the musical highlights of 2023, and ‘Lie In The Sun’ is the perfect appetiser while we count down the days to June 16.
