South Korean singer and actress BIBI has recently launched her first ever world tour, the EVE tour and will be bringing it to Australia and New Zealand this October.
First signed to FeelGhoodMusic in 2017 after she uploaded her own music to SoundCloud, BIBI shot to stardom in 2018 after she came second on the South Korean reality show The Fan. Her debut single was released the following year and her music was quickly racking up streams in the tens of millions.
In 2022 she released her debut album Lowlife Princess:Noir, which peaked in the top 10 on the South Korean Albums chart, and it was followed earlier this year by her second album EVE: Romance
BIBI’s music pulls together multiple soundscapes including pop, R&B, hip hop, rap and jazz and has an undeniable magnetism and almost otherworldly charm that is all immersive and transports you to another, esoteric level.
EVE: Romance sees BIBI at her most assured, blending styles, sounds and even languages into a cohesive whole that is at time breathtaking in its scope.
‘Meat’ is an understated gem, with a rumbling beat, a breathy vocal and the discordant combination of an electric guitar squeal and a jazzy saxophone. ‘Sugar Rush’ has a throbbing electronic beat with BIBI rapping over the top before an acoustic guitar kicks in, while ‘Midnight Cruise’ opens with a blast of 1970s style pop, with the song becoming the most pure pop song on the album, heavily leaning into and celebrating the unashamed joy of 1970s pop. It marks a change in the album where the songs begin to follow a more conventional structure and sound, despite never conforming to any particular genre.
The massive hit ‘Bam Yang Gang’, which hit number 1 in South Korea and has over 61 million streams on Spotify alone, has a a more traditional, retro sound and although the lyrics speak of a breakup, the song is as delicious and comforting as the Korean jelly the title references.
‘Bluebird’ and ‘winter (unreleased)’ round off the album and are almost two halves of the same song. Both feature little more than BIBI’s voice over an acoustic guitar and explore BIBI’s loneliness as she hopes for a relationship in ‘Bluebird’ - ‘Loneliness won’t leave me alone’ - while on ‘winter’ she is more resigned. ‘The more I love, the more you will leave me,’ she sings as she likens her sadness to the depths of a cold winter.
The album also introduced the concept of two distinct personas for BIBI - EVE and EVE-1 which she uses to convey contrasting emotions and perspectives in the music. This additional layer to her artistry will also be brought to the stage as part of the EVE world tour.
A thrillingly charismatic performer with a hint of mystery and elusiveness, BIBI is an absolute superstar in the new generation of South Korean artists, and she needs to be on your playlist right now. Leading up to her performances in Australia and New Zealand, we caught up with BIBI to chat all about the EVE World Tour and the creation of her music.
BIBI, can I just say it is so lovely to talk with you today, because I loved EVE: Romance so much, it's so good. ‘Pygma Girl’ is probably one of my favourite songs of the year, I just love it. So this is really lovely to talk to you today.
Oh, my God, you're the first person who said they love ‘Pygma Girl’ the most!
There should be more people loving it the most, because it is such a good song! The way you blend your music, it's this beautiful mix of R&B and hip hop and very slick pop, and it's all very layered. Has this always been the way you've written music?
There's a lot of genres, I know, and some people think it's very random the way this album sounds but I connect different sounds by putting the lyrics at the centre. I’m a lyrics girl, so I always make sure the words make sense and the sound comes later.
With your work, the lyrics, the production and the melody are quite often conflicting when you break them down, but that's what makes for an interesting song. It's really beautiful.
Thank you so much, that's so beautiful.
We've got your first ever world tour, EVE, which is very cool and a big moment for any artist. What does it mean for you to take this version of yourself and where you're at with your music out into the world?
[Before] I never thought about a world tour, because I never thought there'd be so many who love me around the globe. But now I am halfway through this tour, I am super positive about it, and I feel so thankful the company first suggested that I go on a world tour.
I imagine that is partly because you can now see how many people your music is resonating with? Seeing the numbers for streaming, it’s just a number, but it's not until you see the people in real life that it all comes together.
Yeah, it was so amazing watching people who love me so much in real life, on the other side of the globe. I’m like how do you even know me? I'm very thankful for technology and computers and the person who invented the internet!
You've created two characters, EVE and EVE-1 for your latest music. Will we be seeing these two characters come to life on the stage as well?
Yes, you will be able to see EVE on this tour, in real life! You're going to see the character in the video come out and sing, and I hope people really enjoy it.
Absolutely! You're balancing a music career with an acting career, so creating a character is nothing new for you, but as both industries are demanding, how do you find time to still be such a strong creative force and songwriter when you have so many things going on?
I think having a lot of things going on in my life makes everything much better, and gives me more inspiration. Because if I’m doing nothing, there is nothing to inspire me. When I make music, everybody asks where do you get your inspiration from, is it from a movie, or music or another person?’ But I'm the person who is living my life and that’s what helps me make music. What goes in, has to also come out. Or else you're gonna explode!
You're very bold with your music, but I feel it's also very vulnerable. So the boldness and the sexual explicitness doesn’t feel forced at all, it comes from a very tender place. Have you always found this musical outlet as a place to be your most honest and exposed?
Actually, I'm way more honest in real life. That's why I always say the wrong things! I started to make music because I wanted to analyse and organise my thoughts more. analysed. So it's way less than what I really think inside my head! I love singing bold songs, I just love this unbalanced, contradictory sounds, I love it so much. That's why always working with that type of music, and also with my acting roles.
Has it always been since you were young? Has that always been the thing you wanted to do, songwriting and performing?
I make songs and I perform, but what I always really wanted to do was to talk to people, and let people know more about me. It was really difficult for me to feel normal, and music was a way for me to be closer to people and for people to know me better. When I was really little, I didn’t have the opportunity to talk to many people, and when I first went to elementary school, it was really hard to adjust to other people. I just wanted to be normal and be with friends with everybody, but I couldn't. So that's why I chose music, so I could be normal feel normal. Now I know that there is no such thing as a ‘normal’ person, but music became almost a messenger for me - to let people know more about me,. and so I could know more about people too.
We are seeing across the world this rise in female pop artistry and space and much like your music, very honest, expressive music written by very strong, expressive women. How do you feel a part of this movement, and your part in encouraging other women to do the same?
It is something that I never thought about, because while there are some very conservative parents who expect you to be girly, play with dolls and act like a traditional woman, my family was very different. They wanted me to be a boy - I'm serious, they always made me have short hair! My dad always told me ‘you and me have to protect your mum and your sister’. I don't know why, they acted like I was not a girl and when I was in middle school, I almost thought, is it okay to fall in love with guys, because I 100% felt I was a boy, and I was very confused!
I am 100% happy that I'm a woman, and I’ve always been very expressive and very bold as a woman. I am consciously listening to a lot of female artists, and while I don't understand every woman's hardships, I want to understand their hardships more because I want everyone to feel good about themselves through my music, and in return I can also feel better about myself.
