New Zealand’s Indy today releases her third single ‘Hometown’ and announces her debut EP Threads will be released on February 17.

The track is a gorgeous, nostalgic celebration and remembrance of growing up as a teenager in the suburbs, and the friendships and relationships that are the foundation of your life at that time yet become irreversibly changed when you move away. “I gave you all of my midnights / But baby, now that it's daytime / You are stuck in the quiet of my hometown / I have to go now,” she sings.

A timeless, soulful pop track that expertly moves between quiet, reflective moments and soaring, emotive, full blooded choruses, Yelich’s voice is mesmerising and like everything she does her lyrics read like poetry and connect directly with you, making her story your own.

‘‘Hometown’ is about the memories from my teen years in suburbia that I’ll never forget,” Yelich says. “I wrote this song with Casey Smith, at Ryan Tedder’s house, sitting on the floor playing notes on the piano while the light streamed in. This song took me four years to finish, because I felt like the song was so important and I wanted to get it right. I finished it with Miro Mackie and Daniel Chae and they really brought it back to life. This song is very nostalgic for me, as it makes me think of driving through the suburbs, taking the long way to go past an ex’s house. Returning from the big city and staying at your parent’s.”

‘Hometown’ follows previous singles, the snappy, R&B tinged ‘Killer’ and her mellow electro debut ‘Threads’ and all three tracks will feature on her debut EP Threads, due for release on February 17. The EP will also feature the cathartic song ‘Hero’ and the poppy ‘Freeloader’.

Yelich creates music so self-assured, polished, confident and just beautifully created that it is hard to believe she is just three songs into her music career. A seriously talented performer, her EP could just become one of the greatest debut EPs of 2023, and if you haven’t already, now is the time to make Yelich the soundtrack of your summer.

‘Hometown’ is out now via TMWRK Records. You can buy and stream here.

Threads will be released on 17 February via TMWRK Records. You can pre-save now.
