CLEWS release new single 'Want You That Way'

Sydney based sister-duo CLEWS (aka Lily and Grace Richardson) today release new single ‘Want You That Way’, their first new music of 2021. Moving their sound into a more pop direction, the song is a beguiling mix of pop, guitar rock with hints of country with its sonic landscape abruptly changing direction when you least expect it creating a glorious listening experience. The lyrics explores letting go of relationships when you cannot get what you want from them.

"This song came with the heart wrenching revelation that there's no need to hold on to people who can’t be who you want them to be,” says Lily. “I wrote ‘Want You That Way’ on a rainy day when I was reflecting on my oldest friendship from childhood that’s so non-existent now it’s like it never happened. It's about how lots of different relationships can affect you; your friendships, romantic relationships, your future relationship with the child you’re going to adopt someday, your past relationship with versions of yourself. I’m approaching 25 years of being single, an experience that I feel quite alone in because I haven’t heard too many people talk about it. This song made me realise that although I’ve never been in a long romantic relationship, my friendships have taught me a lot about love. It’s sad that sometimes people have to get cut out to let others in. But in the end, I hope this song serves as a proclamation of self-love and the confidence to be happy on your own.”

Lily first wrote the song on an acoustic guitar in her living room before Grace added harmonies and guitar, with the band then finding the final version by performing the song live and tinkering with it in the studio, with producer Dylan Adams helping the band transform a sad song into a bright, rollicking single.

Originating from the small northern NSW town of Mullumbimby, CLEWS first came to attention in 2018 with the release of their debut single ‘Museum’. Four further singles followed over the years, all in their signature soulful-indie-pop sound. After spending much time touring across the UK and Australia, the duo have formed a reputation for being a truly exciting live act, which has in turn informed their songwriting. With “Want You That Way’ their first new music in almost 12 months, Lily and Grace are re-emerging in 2021 revitalised and ready to embark upon what promises to be their most creative and exciting year yet.

‘Want You That Way’ is out now. You can download on iTunes and stream on Apple Music and Spotify.
