Charli XCX is back with new single 'Von dutch'

Published 1 March 2024

Charli XCX today has launched the next chapter in her music career with the release of new single ‘Von dutch’, the first single from upcoming sixth studio album Brat.

Written by Charli and produced by Easyfun, ‘Von dutch’ is an euphoric electro-synth song with heavy beats that also bring to mind the techno rave sound of the late 1990s, albeit with a 2024 polish. Lyrically, Charli owns her power, kicking off the song with the line ‘It's okay to just admit that you're jealous of me’ with the phrase ‘I’m your number one’ becoming a delicious, hypnotic refrain throughout the track.

Also out today is the video for ‘Von dutch’ that was filmed at Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris. it sees Charli fighting with the camera, wreaking havoc in a empty plane and falling off its wing before emerging battered and bruised - but triumphant - on the luggage conveyor belt. It is the type of incredible music video you can’t tear your eyes away from and leaves you on a high.

One of pop music’s true visionaries, Charli XCX has been instrumental in shaping the pop landscape since she first released music in 2008. Her impact was acknowledged and celebrated last year when she was awarded the Visionary Award at the prestigious Ivor Novellos in London, and next week she will receive the Powerhouse Award at Billboard’s Women In Music ceremony.

Her last album, 2022’s Crash saw her embrace a more pure pop sound and became her first ever number 1 album in the UK and Australia, as well as becoming her first top 10 album in the USA. This year sees her expand her artistry in ever more directions as she co-executive produces the score for the film Mother Mary with Jack Antonoff, produces original music for Benito Skinner’s series Overcompensating on Prime Video and also stars in the Daniel Goldhaber remake of 1978 cult horror film Faces of Death.

Brat, her sixth studio album is due for release in the northern summer and Charli has revealed it will contain 15 tracks, running to 41 minutes. “Every record I make is my ‘favourite record’ once i finish it, but I think this one might be my all time favourite forever,” she said on social media.

One of the greatest pop artists of our generation, new music from Charli XCX is always a major event and with ‘Von dutch’ she doesn’t disappoint. With a continually evolving sound that brings in elements from so many genres while remaining engagingly experimental and unique, Brat is shaping up to be one of the greatest albums of 2024.
