Carla Wehbe is without a doubt one of the greatest young talents on the Australian music scene today. She has a remarkable ability to produce brilliant pop music that is both carefree and deeply intelligent, with lyrics that speak of her life experiences and struggles which remains intensely personal to her while still remaining universally accessible. Once experienced, a Carla Wehbe song will be ‘your song’ forever.

Today she releases her new single, ‘Knight To E5’. A slower, more tender song than we have heard from Wehbe before, it starts off with just a guitar before swelling into a gorgeously cinematic track with an increasingly impassioned vocal performance. Lyrically, it is a heartbreaking account of looking at your life with regret, frustration and putting others’ needs before your own: “Wasting my life as I watch it fly by / I don’t want to die before I get it right,” she sings.

“If you’re a Harry Potter fan you might get the title reference from the first film,” Wehbe says. “In the same way Ron sacrifices his knight so Harry could win the game of wizards chess, the concept of ‘Knight To E5’ is about sacrificing your happiness or self for the happiness of someone you care about, essentially putting them before you. It’s one of the more heartbreaking songs I’ve written, which touches on deep regret and the fear of not living your life for yourself because you’re trying to protect someone else’s happiness.”

‘Knight To E5’ is lifted from Wehbe’s upcoming second EP Jupiter & Mars which is due to be released on March 24. It is her second EP after her 2020 debut, the excellent Half Past Nine and features the previously released singles ‘is forever off the table?’ and ‘introvert (with extroverted expectations)’ alongside ‘Knight To E5’ and two new songs.

“This EP has been a long time coming for me.” Wehbe says. “It’s cinematic, emotionally dramatic and expresses this extensional sense of longing for something, which I really wanted to express in all the songs.”

Last year was one of Wehbe’s biggest year since she released her debut single in 2020, touring around Australia with major international artists opening for international superstars Benson Boone and Alec Benjamin, receiving full additions at triple j for her two singles as well as staging her own live show Holiday Hoedown featuring Charlie Collins, Peach PRC, Gretta Ray and more. A truly special artist, 2023 is shaping up to be another incredible year of music from Carla Wehbe and we can’t wait to hear more.
