Alice D releases mesmerising third EP 'Into The Light'

Independent British singer-songwriter Alice D (full name Alice Dallin-Walker) has recently released her remarkable and hypnotic third EP Into The Light.

Working again with long-time collaborator Tim Blok, the EP continues Alice’s exploration of African and Latin rhythms alongside more traditional R&B and pop sounds. Lyrically, the EP explores self-empowerment and finding the strength within, alongside a strong feminist message.

“One of the overall themes on the EP is finding power and strength, and being authentically, unapologetically yourself,” Alice says. “It’s about stepping into your truth. I feel like during the course of all this I’ve gone from being what I now see as a nervous young girl, to the point where I’m comfortable enough to experiment and go beyond my safe zone. Sure, I still doubt myself from time to time, but I feel more confident than ever. I feel like I’ve stepped into myself. I’ve stepped into my own light.”

The EP is bookended by an instrumental opener and closer and the opener ‘Into The Light - Intro’ sets the scene for what is to come on the EP - electronic sounds giving way to atmospheric, glitchy African beats. It leads into second single ‘Nervous’ which remains as strong as ever, with its booming beats and self-empowerment lyrics ‘If I’m comfortable being myself / Does that make you nervous?’.

‘Ego’ merges Latin sounds with contemporary R&B and pop with Alice’s vocal expertly conveying the tension and sense of anxiety when you realise a relationship is not going the way you expected. ‘Torn between my heart and head / Overcome with fear of losing you’. ‘Protect My Light’ leans into R&B and neo-soul and sees Alice reclaim her ‘light’ after finding herself in bad relationships. ‘Why do you keep ruining my vibe?’ she asks.

Latest single ‘Warrior’ is an highlight of the EP and is both a tribute to women everywhere and a reflection of the personal struggles Alice herself has overcome. ‘My scars decorate me / I wear them with pride’. The song has a warm, pop-R&B soundscape which showcases Alice’s gorgeous vocals, particularly in the ad libs which bring the really emotive feels to the song as it closes.

‘Bittersweet’ returns to R&B, with a hint of jazz and tropical whilst a flute trills away in the background. Lyrically it starts the process of rebirth as Alice looks towards the future after the pain of the past. ‘A broken heart / But a brand new start’. It leads into the final song on the EP and first single ‘Passion’ which sees the journey through anxiety, self-doubt and broken relationships comes to a close with a sense of confidence, renewal and a new relationship; ‘No one can make me feel the way you do’. It is the most Latin sounding track on the EP and has some beautifully hypnotic melodies and harmonies mixed in with the sensuality that snakes through the production and Alice’s vocal.

Alice D has always been a special artist, a musical shapeshifter who can authentically inhabit any genre she chooses while always pairing the sounds with insightful, moving and at times poetic lyrics. Into The Light is a highlight in Alice’s already impressive portfolio and the type of music that is a true listening experience rather than a casual play. Tune in now and float away on a tide of bliss.
