Interview: New talent Marét releases debut single 'Vertigo'

It’s fair to say that Australia’s capital city Canberra isn’t exactly well known for producing world-class pop stars.  But that looks all set to change with the appearance of Canberra-based singer-songwriter Marét.  Her first single ‘Vertigo’ was released in late May and is a stunning slice of synthpop meets R&B (“I predominantly make pop [but] I like to see myself as genre-less,” she says) coupled with powerful lyrics that set out Marét’s ambitions in the first thirty seconds -  ‘I think I can, I know I can break through’.  It is clear a majorly exciting new talent has arrived, and Women In Pop recently spoke to Marét to find out more.

Hi Marét! Can we start by talking about when you first started your career as a musician?
Hey Women In Pop! Marét was born 2 years ago but I have been working on my craft for many years. From childhood, I have been drawn to making music and Marét is the most pure essence of this life long devotion.

What were you doing before you became a musician?
There isn’t a before. Music has permeated everything I have ever done and performing and writing have been a constant in my life for as long as I can remember.

‘Vertigo’ is such an amazing song, what was the inspiration behind it?
I wanted to create an anthem to inspire people to keep moving toward their dreams. To not let life ‘spin you out’ and to climb this mountain of life together. ‘Vertigo’ amplifies that feeling of climbing the mountain and taking it one step at a time, knowing that you can trust whatever it is that’s pulling you there.

What was the process behind creating ‘Vertigo'?
I created Vertigo with Jean-Paul Fung and it went through a few different incarnations before it became what you hear today. In a way the journey of the song was similar to the message of the song: keep on climbing, don’t let go! Surrender to the music.

Is there a particular message you like to project in your music?
I want my music to unite people. I want to help connect everyone on this planet, through understanding that we are all going through similar themes in our lives and we need to share the journey through honesty and love.  My music germinates from tumultuous times, from beautiful moments and a calling for something bigger than I am. I believe it’s a calling that already exists in everyone; for the world to be operating in a different way because it feels so chaotic, unsettling and overwhelming at times.

After 'Vertigo' what's next for Marét?
I will definitely be performing live in the not too distant future. I’m also putting the finishing touches to my debut EP which will be released in August this year and moving forward with creating, singing, planning, writing…

‘Vertigo’ is available now to download on iTunes or stream on Spotify.
